Shopify leaves $4.83 more than Poshmark on one sale. Over 100 sales, that is $482.83. Remember that fees aren't everything — how many buyers a marketplace brings matters too. This tool gives you the fee side clearly so you can weigh the rest.
Lesson 3 · Which fee matters most?
Ask “what if this fee didn't exist?”
The auditor can remove one fee type from every marketplace and re-rank them. In this example, without referral fees Poshmark would jump from #9 to #4 — which tells you its commission is what is really holding it back. You won't find this view on the marketplaces' own calculators.
Glossary
Five words that explain every fee page
- Referral fee
- A percentage the marketplace keeps from every sale — usually the biggest bite. eBay calls it a final value fee, Etsy a transaction fee.
- Listing / per-order fee
- A small flat amount per item or order. Tiny on its own, but it hurts most on cheap products.
- Payment fee
- What card processing costs. Some marketplaces fold it into the referral fee; Etsy and Shopify charge it separately.
- Margin
- The share of each sale you keep as profit after fees and costs. A 20% margin means $20 kept per $100 sold.
- Break-even price
- The lowest price where you stop losing money. Price below it and every sale costs you.
